Come Be a Part of A Reading of Manifestos

COME BE A PART OF

A READING OF MANIFESTOS

What is this event?

Open Books Open Minds Event, inspired by this year's campus read Imagination: A Manifesto by Ruha Benjamin, is organizing a reading of important historical manifestos. Students will be taking turns reading portions of different documents on the steps of the Adams Library.

Look for the posters around campus -- it is next Wednesday (10/14) during Free Period (11:30am-2pm)

What is a manifesto?

It is a Call to Action. It is declaring one's values and voicing one's intention moving forward.

What role have they played in History?

A LOT:

The Declaration of Independence, the Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments (women's rights), the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Black Panther 10-Point Program -- they are all manifestos that outline values and call on others to act to correct societal problems. There are also a number of manifestos in the Art World as well.

How to Participate or Support?

You can read a section of one of the manifestos if you want, or just come to listen.

Free speech is vital to our society. In times when it has been under attack and thwarted, people have continued to speak their minds.

You can sign up to read in a couple of ways:

-- use the QR code on the OBOM posters that are around campus

-- contact Janice Okoomian at jokoomian@ric.edu

(you can probably also show up and volunteer in the moment!)

Spread the Word and We hope to see you there!
