Casting Call: "Disappearing Act" (FILM 355 web series)

The following is a message from Professor Rosalind Sibielski, from the English and Film Studies Departments, followed by the audition submission specs:

My FILM 355 class has teamed with OBOM this semester to produce a 3-episode web series in conjunction with this year's common book (Seek You). We're looking for actors!

We're going to be filming mostly on Fridays, and all filming will take place on the RIC campus. I won't have the exact production schedule until next week, but we are aiming for 10 a.m. to around 4:00 p.m. each Friday and filming will be every Friday between 10/17/2023 and 11/28/2023. (I realize neither of those dates are Fridays; filming will be Fridays during that timeframe.)

Anyone who has questions should feel free to contact me at rsibielski@ric.edu

Thanks!

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS

ALEX - (lead role) Must be able to play late teens to early 20s. Any gender. Any ethnicity. Alex is kind of a know-it-all but doesn’t rub it in people’s faces. They know most things but they keep it to themselves. They are a bit shy and have a hard time communicating with people. They are also being raised by a single dad, with whom they are close. Alex is an aspiring investigator and is really interested in true crime documentaries and podcasts. They become involved in the search for their missing classmate, in part, to prove their investigative skills. Alex has also spent years secretly trying to locate their mom, who left the family when Alex was ten years old and has cut Alex out of her life ever since.

CHARLIE - (lead role) Must be able to play late teens to mid-20s. Any gender. Any ethnicity. Charlie is a conspiracy theorist. Charlie mostly believes the government or any system in place is conspiring against its people. They act on their own beliefs of how the world operates. Charlie is always on either conspiracy theory websites or reddit. Charlie is estranged from their family as a result of their obsession with conspiracy theories. They feel more at home with their online community of conspiracy theorists and have become increasingly isolated from their former friends at school (including Alex).

JESSIE - (lead role) Must be able to play late teens to early 20s. Any gender. Any ethnicity. Jessie is constantly on their phone/laptop scrolling through their multiple social media feeds and posting obsessively to try to gain followers. They're always up to date with pop culture and current events in the news. Jessie comes across as self-absorbed and attention-seeking, but they are really just lonely (and a bit insecure). Jessie is the oldest of six children and feels invisible in their family. They help their parents to care for their younger siblings, but feel like their parents don’t pay any attention to them. Jessie is also struggling to make friends at college, as their social media obsession and seemingly self-absorbed behavior can be off-putting.

JESSIE’S MOM - (walk-on role; 1 scene) Must be able to play early to late 40s. Female. Any ethnicity. Jessie’s mom is a mother of six which makes her very stressed. She is always at work and has little time to spend with her family.

SUBMISSION DETAILS: Please send resume, head shot, and an indication of which part you are interested in being considered for. Email materials to rsibielski@ric.edu. We will be casting through October 12, 2023 or until all roles are filled.

Audition Information: Burbage's Production of "BLKS" by Aziza Barnes

Catia, director and resident artist at Burbage Theatre, has asked that we share information about casting their production of BLKS by Aziza Barnes.

Here is the information she sent:

Burbage Theatre is producing BLKS by Aziza Barnes this Fall!
And would love for all the people who identify with this casting breakdown to audition! Looking to showcase BIPOC talent! You can also send in for any of our other shows this season. You can send in their self tapes at burbagetheatre.org/auditions , we hope to see you there!

Directed by Catia
Rehearsals start October 16
Show runs November 16 - Dec. 3

The casting breakdown is:

Octavia: Deeply awkward, weird, introvert, super dork blk girl. Blk. Mixed blk. 1/2 blk. Whatever. 22. Aspiring writer of movies. Drinks too much and can't hold it as well as Imani.

Imani: Haitian. Very Haitian. Matter fact, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone more Haitian. No accent, but can turn it on when she wants for emphasis. 23. A budding alcoholic by American Standards. Does a first-rate impersonation of Eddie Murphy from his RAW stand-up/movie and is always striving to perfect it.

June: Dates a dude named Jamal, has dated a dude named Jamal for five years, since she and Octavia were in high school together in Los Angeles, their city of birth. Octavia is June's ace boon and roll dogg. 22. June is the only responsible drinker among the three roommates. She plays Call of Duty, knows how to hack and sells weed and is very professional about it. She comes from boujie black folks who have had money in their family for two generations. Lightskin blk girl. Hair always straight and long without weave. She is very proud of this. A prude.

Ry: An employee at Blink Fitness. Errs on the side of butch femme, landing in  a mostly androgynous aesthetic. Loves to laugh and tells a good joke. Occasionally insensitive, but this a product of her strict boundaries and clear communication. Wildly mature for her age, for all ages. From the Bronx. Says "breh" at the end of most thoughts and/or sentences. 25. Dominican.

Justin: A lovesick, Watched Shakespeare in Love too often as a child through his parents divorce. Says things like "I want to make love to you." nd "I want to rub your feet" and means them. You'd think he'd get all the ladies. He doesn't and hasn't for quite some time. 23. From Trinidad and Tobago.

That Bitch on the Couch: The only white person in this play. She's from Westchester, New York. Incredibly wealthy, like old money white folk WASP and all that. 23. Incredibly white. Went to Exeter Academy for high school type shit. Did cotillion and founded her boarding school's Blk student union. It was confusing.

Our 2023-2024 Season!

TOMORROW -- Visiting Artist: Cliff Odle, director of "Topdog/Underdog"

Hello all --

Cliff Odle-- actor, director, playwright -- will be joining us for tomorrow's Music Theatre Company meeting.

Cliff is presently in town to direct the Gamm's production of "Topdog/Underdog" by Susan-Lori Parks.  ("Topdog/Underdog" concerns Lincoln and Booth, two African-American brothers locked in conflict and navigating their way through racism and poverty, as they deal with their own past. For more information on this play, see this wiki link. You can read an interview with Cliff about the play and this production here.)

Originally from New Jersey, Cliff has taught and performed all over New England and is currently part of the faculty at University of North Carolina School for the Arts. He is in town until next week and has generously agreed to stop by to talk with us about his professional path. (His biography at UNCSA is here.)

He will be at Music Theatre Company meeting at 9am in the BABS/Little Theater space.

ALL THEATRE MAJORS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND.

Reminder: Susie Schutt Workshop/Session This Wednesday

Hope you all had a fun long weekend!

Just a Reminder to spread the word that Susie Schutt of ThirdPerson Therapy will be holding a Stress Management/Self-Care workshop for the beginning of the semester this Wednesday, September 6 from 12:30-1:30pm in the BABS rehearsal space (formerly the Little Theater).

This workshop is a chance to strategize around this term's potential challenges, decompress, or just share with your peers and colleagues.

Take advantage, if you can, of Susie's ability to be on campus. She creates a very safe and comfortable environment for the students that she meets, and has been a welcome and popular addition to our stage production staff.

No faculty will be present; this is for students only.
