Auditions -- Head Trick Theatre

Head Trick Theatre seeks actors of all races/ethnicities, ages, and gender identities for its Spring/Summer 2023 shows, INCIDENT AT VICHY and AGNES DE CASTRO!
--
INCIDENT AT VICHY
by Arthur Miller
Ten people, rounded up off the street, sit in a detention center in Nazi-collaborationist France, suspected of being Jewish. Waiting to be called in to the room where they and their papers will be inspected and questioned, they confront the truth of what will happen to the people who do not come back through that door, and of the fear, hatred, and complicity that lie in the human heart.
Performances June 16-July 2 at 134 Mathewson St., Providence. Performers available for some dates but not others may audition as alternate/understudy arrangements may be considered. This play was originally cast uniformly with cis white men, but Head Trick seeks a diverse cast of actors of any race/ethnicity or gender, and would love for some audition submissions to come from Jewish actors or others who feel a connection to the subject matter.

AGNES DE CASTRO
by Catharine Trotter
Agnes de Castro. That’s the name on everyone’s lips: the Princess who loves her, the Prince who longs for her, the noble villains who lust for her. And Elvira, whose only thought is revenge on the woman who has everything that should be hers.
This will be a READING with performances August 5 and 8 in Providence, possible other dates TBC. Please note that the play contains mentions of sexual assault.

--
Auditions will be held over video chat on Thursday, April 13 and Saturday, April 15. Please fill out this form and we will send you a video chat link and a timeslot: https://forms.gle/n7Mhrr6KRsJZmjQ56
Please prepare one or two memorized dramatic monologues. If you are interested in a role in AGNES DE CASTRO, one of these monologues must be a classical verse monologue (Shakespeare or similar). If you are unable to make these times, contact us at headtricktheatre@gmail.com or via the form and we will see if it is possible to accommodate you.
All actors must be vaccinated and boosted (bivalent), with no exceptions. In-person rehearsals will be masked if necessary. Participation is on a volunteer basis; an honorarium may be paid depending on available funding.

Stress-Releasing/Self-Care Workshop with Susie Schutt!

*** 1 Month left in the Semester and School Year!! ***

Does the above sentence make you feel tired, over-extended, emotional, stressed, etc.?

If you could use a little support making it through the final weeks of the term, next week our program will be visited by Susie Schutt, who will lead a workshop/self-care session designed to help you tap into your inner resources.

Susie is a therapist who specializes in drama therapy techniques. In addition to her therapy practice, Susie is a professional director (currently working on the Wilbury Group’s production of Indecent) and has helped RIC Theatre this year by working as intimacy choreographer for Spring Awakening and Small Mouth Sounds

This workshop/session will meet next Wednesday, April 5 from 12:30-1:30pm in the Little Theater.

Sign up for the session if you need a moment to discuss self-care strategies, to feel support in community, or to simply vent in a safe space.

Faculty and other instructors will not be present – this is expressly for the student body.

Sign up at this link

(Please note -- since this is the first time we are offering this workshop, there will be a cap at 20 attendees. If more people wish to sign up, we will arrange for another session!)

Resources from Rebecca Maxfield

Hello all --

Rebecca Maxfield sent us a great list that could serve as a starting point for anyone who is looking for plays and other resources:

Rebecca also invited students to follow HeadTrickTheatre on Facebook, or to write to her at headtricktheatre@gmail.com

Regarding the links, Rebecca writes:
"I don't remember how I heard of Agnes de Castro. It might have been in the Cambridge Companion to Lesbian Literature and then I went out and read it.
The Lucky Chance, our March 2020 show, is in a book of Restoration comedies by women playwrights that I'd picked up secondhand at some poimt.
I'd seen the Goblin Market musical in college but don't remember how I started thinking about it again, or how I learned about this stage version of Mrs. Dalloway, or about (George Sands') Gabriel.

All I can say is that looking for anthologies/lists or googling stuff ("early modern women playwrights" or "black plays before 1950"or "pre-1900 lesbian theatre" or whatever) is a good starting point but that you basically just have to keep doing it and doing it until you find stuff that you're into!

If students happen to have weird specific queries I can see if there's anything on my radar, even if it's mot something I would have wanted to direct/produce myself!"

So there you go, folks. Another great resource in our community!

Guest Artist Talk (3/22): Rebecca Maxfield of Head Trick Theatre

Rebecca Maxfield, artistic director of Head Trick Theatre, will be visiting the next Theatre Organization Meeting (Wednesday, March 22 at 12:00pm).

Head Trick Theatre's website can be found at http://www.headtricktheatre.org/.

Head Trick Theatre is a theatre company begun and operated by Rebecca Maxfield, created with a community-minded mission to amplify the voices of the female-identified.

In addition to exploring different approaches to Shakespeare's canon, Ms. Maxfield has overseen productions such as the Goblin Market (a dramatization of the sensual Christina Rossetti coming-of-age poem), Queen Margaret (Jennifer Dick's play that tracks Margaret through Shakespeare's plays, giving her her own dedicated narrative), and Mrs. Dalloway (adapted from Virginia Woolf's novel -- if you've seen the movie The Hours, then you'll be familiar with the story and themes).

Head Trick has also produced God of Vengeance by Sholem Asch -- this is the play that is the basis for Paula Vogel's Indecent!

Most recently, Head Trick Theatre produced Aristophanes' The Assemblywomen, in response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade and other proposed legislation designed to curb reproductive rights. (This piece was performed in parks, libraries, and other free spaces across Rhode Island last summer.)

Rebecca has been very interested in working with students in our program. In addition to hearing how she has built her own company and continued to work through the pandemic, this visit will be a nice way to introduce her to our community of artists.

Please come and welcome Rebecca to RIC!
