Paid gig!

Hello! My name's Tom Murphy. I'm a former RIC student, currently living in LA but in town in RI to shoot a short film.

It's a simple piece about people going about everyday lives (walking down the street, waiting for a bus, washing dishes at home, etc.). The hope is that it'll serve dual purposes, both as a standalone short and as the intro to a longer drama film we're planning to shoot in the spring.

Actors needed, roughly college-age, of any genders and ethnicities.  We're currently filming and would be looking to film new actors soon (essentially now through the end of the year), so if you’re interested get in touch asap.

It's not big money but it'd be paid work, and all filming is taking strong COVID precautions.

KCACTF Self-Registration -- Program Intent Form

** Form Deadline Wednesday December 15, 2021 **

The annual Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival is once again virtual this year and being held the week of January 25, 2022.

While we have had specific students identified as nominees for Irene Ryans, Maltbys, etc. the conference is once again allowing individuals to self-register for/enter these events; the cost of attending the virtual conference is $35.

If you are interested, please go to the very simple form on this link ("Submit your Program Intent Form") and designate what area of the conference interests you.

http://www.kcactfregion1.org/

This is not an iron-clad commitment, so you may change your mind in the next 3 weeks or so--but they have asked for Intent to be completed by end of day this Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

(If you do fill this form out, faculty contact is Casey Seymour Kim; email is casey.seymourkim@gmail.com)

Freshman Performance Monologue for 091 Submissions

Hello all!

Here is the monologue for the Freshman Performance and General Concentrators (and also those who wish to be Performance Concentrators) who are taking THTR 091. (For those of you who are not Freshman or new to the program -- every Performance/General concentrator is not on my advisee list, and you can help spread the word!)

Please have it memorized and upload the video of your performance to this padlet link by December 3:

https://padlet.com/caseyseymourkim/egekupmaeooufxl6

This monologue is from the play Variations on the Death of Trotsky by David Ives. I strongly recommend reading the play. (It is a one-act, so it is short.) If you need the PDF, email me and I will send it to you. (casey.seymourkim@gmail.com)

Thank you and have a wonderful holiday weekend!

--Casey SK

Here is the Monologue:

Trotsky:     So even an assassin can make the flowers grow. The gardener was false, and yet the garden that he tended was real. How was I to know he was my killer when I passed him every day? How was I to know that the man tending the nasturtiums would keep me from seeing what the weather will be like tomorrow? How was I to know I'd never see Casablana, which wouldn't be made until 1942 and which I would have despised anyway? How was I to know I'd never get the know about the bomb, or the eighty thousand dead at Hiroshima? Or rock and roll, or Gorbachev, or the state of Israel? How was I supposed to know I'd be erased from the history books of my own land..?

Sometime, for everyone, there's a room that you go into, and it's the room that you never leave. Or else you go out of a room and it's the last room that you'll leave.

This is my last room.

Quick Note Re: Auditions for Playboy of the West Indies

Hello all --

It has come to our attention that there are some concerns about the auditions for the play "Playboy of the West Indies" on Sunday.

The play is an adaptation of "Playboy of the Western World," which takes place in Ireland. The play we hope to do takes place in the West Indies.

The play was chosen by our guest director Don Mays, who is a theater and film director and writer who has worked for Providence Black Repertory Company, Wilbury Group, AFRI Film Production, and other venues.  He is on Facebook, if you wish to see what work he has done:  https://www.facebook.com/don.mays2

This choice is part of our program's commitment to finding vehicles that offer a wider variety of performance opportunities for our students.

All theater majors are required to audition for all Mainstage shows -- while there is always opportunity for discussion of casting issues, there is no need to worry about inappropriate or insensitive casting choices for this particular production.

Don has asked for two contrasting contemporary monologues, which everyone should be able to provide. You can always talk to him directly, as well, if you have any concerns or questions.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!

Synopsis:

A storyteller, Eccho, tell a story from a past time in America, now called The City.

Years of social upheaval and corporate and political corruption has led to The Madness Time, a chaotic and violent reality where street gangs ruled.

Out of the Madness Time, a charismatic leader named Train emerges determined to unite the warring factions and forge a new nation. He preaches that America is a failed idea whose time had passed, and the future will be a new order of his design and under his control. He is supported by a woman he calls Second, a brilliant and ambitious doctor, and Looms, a ruthless former gang member.

Also emerging from the rubble is a woman Makeda who believes in the Will, the spiritual force that connects humans to their dreams and need for self-determination.

Makeda believes that America is not a failed idea, but an unfulfilled promise Her followers include Omar, a former gang leader determined to change his life and Leta, a former teacher and with a perceptive spirit. They and others have found safety in a former prison called YESTERDAY.

As Eccho’s story unfolds, Train is on the verge of gaining complete control of The City. But he feels threatened by Makeda, his former lover, who will not bend the knee or accept his offer to be queen to his king.

While Train attends to the suppression of a rebellion in The City Second is left to hold the people at Yesterday hostage.

Concerned that Makeda could interfere with her ambitions, Second stabs her, leaving her for dead,

When news of Makeda’s death reaches Train, fearing for his own mortality, he commands Second to replace his human parts with machine parts.

When Train realizes that Makeda has survived and her power is growing, he summons his followers to march with him to destroy Yesterday.

Makeda, senses Train’s approach and must summon her fading strength and encourage her people to push the power of The Will and Dreams beyond Yesterday’s walls to reach the people in The City.

As Train closes in on Yesterday, the machine parts begin to fail and Second takes command of the march.

This leads to a dramatic showdown as the two leaders encounter each other, with the fate of the future at stake.

Never the Sinner ASM Needed

If anyone is interested in getting involved in this semester's Growing Stage Production of Never the Sinner, we are currently searching for Assistant Stage Managers. It's a great way to get involved, meet people in the program, and have a great learning experience as well! Learn what stage managers do and help with the production as we build a student-run show.

If you're interested in helping contact Mak Holahan at mholahan_9332@email.ric.edu for more information.

78 Practicum Classes

Happy midterm!

If you're getting your 78 credit by doing hours in the costume shop or scene shop, this is a great week to work! Both shops will be open Monday through Friday 10-4 as we prepare for tech next weekend. After 1776 opens on 11/10, hours may be harder to get as there will be less work for these shops to do.

All 78 students must fill out the top of a 78 Evaluation form and give it to their supervisor for grading and signature. For example, if you're getting credit for acting in THE MOORS, Casey needs to fill out the form for you and then you should both sign it and then you should turn it in.

SUPERVISORS:

Acting for The Moors - Casey

Acting for 1776 - Bill

Run crew either show/Posters - Nicki

Scene Shop - Alan

Costume Shop - Kerry

These forms will be available in the downstairs office suite starting Monday, 11/1. These must be turned in to Nicki by 12/1. They can be put in her office mailbox or slid under her office door if she's not there.
