Never the Sinner ASM Needed

If anyone is interested in getting involved in this semester's Growing Stage Production of Never the Sinner, we are currently searching for Assistant Stage Managers. It's a great way to get involved, meet people in the program, and have a great learning experience as well! Learn what stage managers do and help with the production as we build a student-run show.

If you're interested in helping contact Mak Holahan at mholahan_9332@email.ric.edu for more information.

78 Practicum Classes

Happy midterm!

If you're getting your 78 credit by doing hours in the costume shop or scene shop, this is a great week to work! Both shops will be open Monday through Friday 10-4 as we prepare for tech next weekend. After 1776 opens on 11/10, hours may be harder to get as there will be less work for these shops to do.

All 78 students must fill out the top of a 78 Evaluation form and give it to their supervisor for grading and signature. For example, if you're getting credit for acting in THE MOORS, Casey needs to fill out the form for you and then you should both sign it and then you should turn it in.

SUPERVISORS:

Acting for The Moors - Casey

Acting for 1776 - Bill

Run crew either show/Posters - Nicki

Scene Shop - Alan

Costume Shop - Kerry

These forms will be available in the downstairs office suite starting Monday, 11/1. These must be turned in to Nicki by 12/1. They can be put in her office mailbox or slid under her office door if she's not there.

P. William Hutchinson

The Rhode Island College Theatre Program mourns the passing of Doc Hutchinson. For years he helped to grow the program and inspire an entire generation of artists. He led an incredibly rich life and the entire Music, Theatre, and Dance department will continue to feel his loss as a friend as well as a colleague.

Accumulating more than four decades of experience in academia, Dr. Hutchinson became a professor emeritus of theater at Rhode Island College in 2004. Teaching various undergraduate courses throughout his career, he also served as the chairperson of the department of music, theatre and dance, and was the coordinator of theatre graduate degree programs. Dr. Hutchinson also held teaching appointments at Tougaloo College in Mississippi for three years prior and was the director of dance and drama at the Mathewson Street United Methodist Church in Providence from 1969 to 1975.

Dr. Hutchinson's distinguished career history has included directing over 100 plays and readings between 1957 and 2006. A dedicated civic advocate on behalf of his community, he has been instrumental in the proliferation of the arts, beginning in 1970 as the Rhode Island Arts Education Project theater coordinator. He later held leadership roles with the American College Theater Festival, the Providence Inner City Arts Association and the Rhode Island Playwrights Theater, and was an artistic director, board director and advisory committee member for the NewGate Theater. Additionally, Dr. Hutchinson lent his expertise to the Rhode Island Department of Human Services in various capacities for nearly 20 years between 1985 and 2004.

Interested in theater since the age of six, Dr. Hutchinson joined the drama club in junior high school, began acting, and received his first award for exemplary performance. After high school, he pursued an education at Franklin Marshall College, attaining a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1957. He subsequently attended Princeton Theological Seminary, where he acquired a Bachelor of Divinity in 1960. Dr. Hutchinson also completed a Master of Arts in speech and theater at Teachers College, Columbia University in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in theater at Northwestern University in 1968.

Dr. Hutchinson was elected as a fellow of the New England Theatre Conference in 1987. A nonprofit organization, the Conference provides various resources to theater artists and educators throughout the region. He is a former Danforth Fellow as well. Established by the Danforth Foundation, it was one of the largest nonprofit foundations that funded religious and higher education projects throughout the United States.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Hutchinson was acknowledged with a Recognition Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1983 and a Directing Award from the New England region of the Kennedy Center, American College of Theater Festival, in 1984. In 2003, he received the Claiborne Pell Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts from Trinity Repertory Company. The same years he also received several alumni accolades and a Distinguished Service Award from the faculty of arts and sciences at Rhode Island College. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Hutchinson has been showcased in approximately 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.

Never the Sinner Callbacks

Congratulations to all who came out to the audition. You all did exceptionally well and made my job very difficult! The following people have been called back:

Leopold:

Alex LeBlanc
Brayden Fanti
Nick Corsi
Derek Rivera

Loeb:
Alex LeBlanc
Daniel O’Donnell
Derek Rivera
Nick Corsi

Darrow:
Bailey Oliveira
Daniel O’Donnell
Mackenzie Richard

Crowe:
Brayden Fanti
Mackenzie Richard
Reegan Camire

Callbacks will be held on Sunday, October, 17th from 2pm - 5pm in the Little Theatre. Please prepare the sides for the roles that you have been called back for. I know that most of you have not been able to read the full play as it is very difficult to find. That being said I am not looking for you to memorize your sides, rather familiarize yourselves with the material.

Any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Jared Nobrega or Mak Holahan.

LOEB AND LEOPOLD SIDES

(Pages 74 - 75)
Leopold: “Despite the misguided opinion of Dr. White I can state categorically that I was driving
the car at the time and was not responsible for striking the blows that killed poor Bobby Franks. I
would only be too happy to swear under oath that Nathan Leopold was responsible for the
murderous attack…” You’ve got to be kidding!

Loeb: Come on, Babe -

Leopold: You know perfectly well you did it - What’s the use of claiming it was me?! It makes no
difference as to our actual guilt. We are both equally guilty!

Loeb: Just so. It makes no legal difference anyhow, so why do you care? Look, I just think it
would be easier on my mom if she thought you did it. Maybe if she thinks I didn’t actually, you
know … kill him … then maybe she might … I don’t know ….

Leopold: I have a family too, you know!

Loeb: and your family has been with you every step of the way!

Leopold: I’m sorry, Dick, I can’t go along with this.

Loeb: Why is this such a fucking big deal with you all of a sudden?!

Leopold: Does the truth have no value then?!

Loeb: I don’t see why, when did it ever before?!

Leopold: I am incapable of murdering anyone!

Loeb: Is that so?! Nathan Leopold Jr., the “Mad Genius” not capable of murder?! I mean, Babe,
today I got this postcard from some little floozy that said: “Keep your faith up, Dick. We know
that you have been badly led astray by that horrible Leopold.” How do you like that, horrible
Leopold?!

Leopold: It’s nonsense!

Loeb: Of course it is! I know that old chum, and you know that, but they don’t know that. So we
laugh at them, just like always. So what’s it going to be then? Do we go on together or do we go
our separate ways? What do you say, boy-o? Us against us or us against them?

Leopold: I will not accept this.

Loeb: You will not accept this?

Beat

Leopold: No.

DARROW SIDES
(Page 84)

Darrow: I have stood for three months as one might stand trying to sweep back the
tide. I wish to make no false pretenses in this court. The easiest thing and the most popular
thing to do would be to hang my clients. I know it. Men and women who do not think will
applaud. The cruel and thoughtless will approve. It will be easy… today. But stretching out over
this land more and more fathers and mothers, the humane, the kind, and the hopeful - who are
gaining an understanding not only for these two boys but of their own as well - they will join in
no acclaim at the death of my clients. They would ask that the shedding of blood be stopped.

(Pause.)

Your Honor stands now between the future and the past. I know the future is with me,
and what I stand for here. I am pleading for life and understanding. I am pleading for the infinite
mercy that considers all. I am pleading for a time when hatred and cruelty will not control the
hearts of men, when we can learn by reason and judgment and understanding that mercy is the
highest attribute of man. And it is all that will someday … someday … redeem us.

CROWE SIDES
(Page 79)

Crowe: Your Honor, society can endure. Criminals can escape punishment, and the law can endure. All manner of crime and corruption can be heaped on the head of pure Justice and still, she will hold her head high in pride. But if a court, such as this court, should say that it believes in the doctrine of Darrow, that you should not hang when the law says you must, then a greater blow has been struck to our institution than by a hundred, yes, a thousand murderers. And it is a blow, your Honor, that will leave us crippled! Violated! And palpably less than we were before these streets were echoing with the names of Leopold and Loeb!
