Small Mouth Sounds Auditions -- No Specific Dress Required!

Hello Auditioners --

I've been asked to let people know: auditioners do not need to dress specifically for a character, or for movement.

The play is more about communication that is unspoken -- not necessarily stylized movement. Just put together a standard audition outfit, ie, wear something that looks nice but is comfortable.

E-Z.

The auditions are very simple & straightforward--again, no need to dress up for a particular part.

Have a wonderful weekend and I'll you on Sunday!

THTR 091 -- Freshman Monologue Text

Hello all --

Here is the text of the monologue to present for THTR 091.

If you wish to read the play (it is very short), you can find a pdf at this link

From Variations on the Death of Trotsky by David Ives.

Trotsky:

So even an assassin can make the flowers grow. The gardener was false, and yet the garden that he tended was real. How was I to know he was my killer when I passed him every day? How was I to know that the man tending the nasturtiums would keep me from seeing what the weather will be like tomorrow? How was I to know I'd never see Casablanca, which wouldn't be made until 1942 and which I would have despised anyway? How was I to know I'd never get to know about the bomb, or the eighty thousand dead at Hiroshima? Or rock and roll, or Gorbachev, or the state of Israel? How was I supposed to know I'd be erased from the history books of my own land..?

Sometime, for everyone, there's a room that you go into, and it's the room that you never leave. Or else you go out of a room and it's the last room you'll ever leave. This is my last room.

Small Mouth Sounds pdf script -- FYI

Hello folks --

Since some people have asked about the script, I created a pdf for anyone who is curious.

I couldn't attach the pdf to this blog post, but can add a link to the google folder where I've filed it:

A Note about Working on this Play:

This play is about a handful of people who attend a therapeutic, meditative retreat that requires silence. As a result, much of the play is conducted in silence.

Each of the characters has some major issues that need to be dealt with in their life – they have all experienced some form of trauma that has affected their daily life and that they seek to heal. This means that there will, of course, be moments of sincerity and earnestness – but there will also be lighter, goofy moments. This play contains humor as well as drama.

Audition Material: Auditions will have two parts.

First, auditioners should present one of the following two monologues (you don't have to have it memorize it, but be familiar enough with it to be able to look up comfortably from the paper, tablet, or phone):

1.) So yeah, I got divorced. Then both of my parents died, six months apart. I started drinking. I had thoughts of suicide that were, well pretty much constant? Then another miracle, I got into the program, got sober, stopped wanting to kill myself - but after that, ironically, my sponsor killed himself- by walking traffic on the Long Island Expressway. That was last year. The same thing actually happened to my dog. Hit by a car, I mean. That was a month later. I don't mean to equate the two. I just think it's weird, the, like synchronicities, and patterns and stuff that are everywhere, you know if you look at them. I have my health. Except for the intermittent short-term memory loss. Which, given everything, may actually be a blessing...

OR

2.) What are you doing? We're not leaving - come on. That is so - stupid. I didn't write that for you to see - it's a stupid - it's not even real - it's not what I meant - it's not that I want to be rid of YOU, I just... I went for a walk. I cleared my head, I feel so much better. I think I was just, it's been so hard for so long. Since even before - you got sick - It's hard on me too. At home, it's you know. And then I go to work and I mean, I sit there all day, like absorbing my clients. Listening to their fucking problems and I have no way to - I am up to my eyeballs. I am - you are not only one this is happening to. And sometimes... I just want to tell everyone to go FUCK THEMSELVES... Okay. You're right, let's go. Let's go - check into a hotel. There's got to be a cute B&B in town. Order some room service, bottle of wine, see what's On Demand... Who needs enlightenment, let's have merlot.

Second, without speaking, communicate the following:

Do you want to eat?
No? Are you sure?
It's really good...
You have to eat something.
I'm worried about you.
This is so frustrating!

Thank you!
Casey SK!

Alan is looking for assistance with a shop call tomorrow for anyone interested in helping with working on the Spring Awakening set and in the shop overall.

Hours for THURSDAY 10/27

Senior Spotlight

Hello all!

We are bringing back the "Senior Spotlight" social media theme we did during Covid! If you are graduating this December, please email Nicki a recent headshot and a small blurb about you... for example, you could include what you do in theatre, why you love theatre, what you've worked on at RIC, plans post graduation, etc...

These photos and blurbs will be featured on our instagram and Facebook towards the end of this semester. We will put another call out next semester for people graduating in May.

We're also looking for other photos that anyone may want to contribute - These could be shots from campus, from class, rehearsal, etc... that would also be shared on social media as part of a "life on campus" behind the scenes theme. Please make sure you have permission though from any people that are in your shots! These can also be emailed to Nicki. Thanks!
