THTR 091 Freshman Juries Monologue

Hello, all!

Here is the monologue for the Freshmen Performance and General Concentrators (and also those who wish to be Performance Concentrators) who are taking THTR 091. (For those of you who are not Freshman or new to the program -- not every Performance/General concentrator is on my advisee list, and you can help spread the word!)

Please have it memorized and upload the video of your performance to this padlet link by December 4:

https://padlet.com/caseyseymourkim/v4lv3n4rcif6x0ph

This monologue is from the play Variations on the Death of Trotsky by David Ives.

I strongly recommend reading the play. (It is a one-act, so it is short.) If you need the PDF, email me and I will send it to you. (casey.seymourkim@gmail.com)

Thank you and have a wonderful holiday break!

Casey SK

Here is the Monologue:

Trotsky:

So even an assassin can make the flowers grow. The gardener was false, and yet the garden that he tended was real. How was I to know he was my killer when I passed him every day? How was I to know that the man tending the nasturtiums would keep me from seeing what the weather will be like tomorrow? How was I to know I’d never see Casablanca, which wouldn’t be made until 1942 and which I would have despised anyway? How was I to know I’d never get to know about the bomb, or the eighty thousand dead at Hiroshima? Or rock and roll, or Gorbachev, or the state of Israel? How was I supposed to know I’d be erased from the history books of my own land..?

Sometime, for everyone, there’s a room that you go into, and it’s the room that you never leave. Or else you go out of a room and it’s the last room that you’ll ever leave. This is my last room.

College Light Opera Company (CLOC)

From alumni Marisa Rebelo!

I've been working since May as the Publicist/Alumni Development Coordinator for the College Light Opera Company (CLOC) down in Cape Cod and wanted to share with you all an opportunity for RIC students next summer.

Our application portal for CLOC's 2021 Season has just recently opened. There are opportunities for singers/actors, musicians, conductors, arts administrators, choreographers, stage managers, and designers/tech students. Since the number of students living on campus has to be reduced due to COVID-19, they are especially interested this year in students who are skilled in multiple areas (which I know RIC students are!)

I believe CLOC is more than just your average summer stock. The reason I've loved working for them so much is because education is the top priority of their mission, and the staff are genuine people who care about helping the students learn. They have an extensive alumni network that spans 4 decades and is made up of professional artists working all across the country in Broadway/TV, National/Int' Tours, and leading opera/theatre companies. Many of those alums come back each season to teach and direct shows.

Feel free to share this email with your students or direct them to www.collegelightoperacompany.com to learn more/apply. If any of the students have questions, I am more than happy to answer them through email at publicist@collegelightoperacompany.com

KCACTF & RIC Fall Productions

 Hello, all --

RIC's fall productions will be participating in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Conference this year.

This means that a respondent from KCACTF will be providing feedback for our shows (we think this will be via Zoom, of course, on the final day of each show's streaming weekend). Everyone involved in these productions will be welcome to attend this feedback session. Once we have the date(s) of these feedback sessions confirmed, we will notify the respective cast of each show.

As with previous productions, one student performer from each production will be nominated for the Irene Ryan Scholarship Award showcase.

The conference will take place at the end of January, 2021 and will be exclusively virtual/remote. There will be asynchronous and synchronous performances and workshops at the conference.

If you are interested in attending, the Theatre Department is able to sponsor 20 students on a First-Come, First-Serve basis. (If you aren't one of the 20, you can still attend--you would just have to pay for the registration yourself. The cost is $25 if you register by December 31, $35 if you register afterwards.)

If you wish to attend, please let Casey Seymour Kim know. (casey.seymourkim@gmail.com)

Hello all!

We are incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to host a special guest this Friday, November 6 at 2pm: Sokeo Ros.

Here is what you should know about Sokeo:

Sokeo is a Providence-based hip-hop and theatre artist.

He was born in a Cambodian refugee camp in Thailand, arriving in the United States at the age of three. As a sophomore in high school, he began performing with the Carriage House Performers, a Providence-based hip-hop group.

He is presently the Co-Artistic Director of Everett Company. He is working with middle school students to help them understand and cope with their trauma in collaboration with the Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS). He also works with incarcerated youth in Massachusetts in collaboration with the Department of Youth Services.

He has created his own performance pieces, in addition to working with Everett on such community-minded pieces as The Freedom Project, about the high school-to-prison pipeline.

He has also just been named by the Kennedy Center to represent Providence and Rhode Island in the First Works/NEFA Arts Across America series.

In short, Sokeo is one of the busiest artists around. He is also incredibly generous performer and educator. Check out links to his work below:
