It has come to our attention that there are some concerns about the auditions for the play "Playboy of the West Indies" on Sunday.
The play is an adaptation of "Playboy of the Western World," which takes place in Ireland. The play we hope to do takes place in the West Indies.
The play was chosen by our guest director Don Mays, who is a theater and film director and writer who has worked for Providence Black Repertory Company, Wilbury Group, AFRI Film Production, and other venues. This choice is part of our program's commitment to finding vehicles that offer a wider variety of performance opportunities for our students.
All theater majors are required to audition for all Mainstage shows -- while there is always opportunity for discussion of casting issues, there is no need to worry about inappropriate or insensitive casting choices for this particular production.
Don has asked for two contrasting contemporary monologues, which everyone should be able to provide. You can always talk to him directly, as well, if you have any concerns or questions.
