QUEER DURATIONS Symposium

at Brown University

December 5-7, 2024

Part of the Brown Arts IGNITE Series, this three-day symposium will explore duration in queer and trans aesthetics and performance.

QUEER DURATIONS is a three-day symposium that delves into the significance of duration as a vital aesthetic concern for performance, visual, and media artists, illuminating duration’s importance to the artistic rendering of queer lives, communities, and subjectivities. Highlights of the symposium will include performances developed by four of today’s most innovative performance artists: Anh Vo, Dorian Wood, Elliot Reed, and Xiomara Sebastián Castro Niculescu (XSCN). These performances will be accompanied by panel discussions with leading curators Adrienne Edwards (Whitney Museum of American Art), Lia Gangitano (Participant INC, NY), and Shoghig Halajian (Human Resources, LA); artists Sharon Hayes, Brooke O’Hara, Julie Tolentino, Simon Leung, and Jonathan Berger; and scholars Tavia Nyong’o, Heather Love, and Summer Kim Lee, in conversation with Brown faculty members Leticia Alvarado, J Dellecave, and Leon Hilton and Brown Arts Insitute’s Associate Curator Thea Quiray Tagle. A video program of durational artworks, curated by Brown PhD student JD Stokely, will run concurrently with the symposium.
