ASAP: Casting Call for Understudies at Trinity Rep

TRINITY REP CASTING INFORMATION: • We are looking to cast five (5) non-union adult actors who are local to Providence, RI as understudies in our upcoming production of La Cage aux Folles. 

ABOUT LA CAGE AUX FOLLES: • La Cage aux Folles, music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, book by Harvey Fierstein, adapted from La Cage aux Folles by Jean Poiret, directed and choregraphed by Taavon Gamble. 

SYNOPSIS: • This Best Musical Tony-winner follows Georges, the proprietor of a drag club, and his husband, Albin, the star attraction. When Georges’ son announces his engagement to the daughter of a homophobic politician, Georges plans to closet himself for a family dinner. But Albin, knowing the importance of staying true to yourself, has other ideas … and hijinks ensue. La Cage aux Folles is funny, genuine, and full of show-stopping numbers. It is sure to lead to “The Best of Times!” 

AUDITION MATERIAL AND PREPERATION: • Please select an understudy track that you would like to audition for and find the corresponding music cuts and scene sides in this Dropbox folder. o Only if interested in u/s Albin/Francis, please prepare the material for Albin, the Francis song cut and a monologue of your choice. • Sides do not have to be memorized although overall familiarity is helpful. • Please do not copy or distribute sides. 

LA CAGE UNDERSTUDY CASTING BREAKDOWN: 

• Track #1: u/s Albin/Francis; mature, energetic, powerhouse voice, fine comedic actor and can move well. (Albin, Baritone G2-F4;). Early to late 30s and 50s. 

• Track #2: u/s Dindon/Renaud/Georges; mature, energetic, powerhouse voice, fine comedic actor and can move well. (George, Baritone A#2-G4). Early to late 40s and 50s. 

• Track #3: u/s Jean-Michel/Jacob; lyric baritone, brilliant comedian and can act, sing, and move well. (Range: Jean-Michel, A#2-G4, Jacob, Bb2-Ab4). Mid to late 20s and 30s. 

• Track #4: u/s Marie Dindon/M. Renaud; must sing and move well and be a fine comedian. (Range: F4-A5). Early to late 40s and 50s.

 • Track #5: u/s Anne/Jacqueline; spunky; a superb dancer who acts well, charming; very theatrical. (Range: B3-F5). 20s-50s. 

AUDITION INFORMATION AND SIGN-UP: 

• Auditions will take on Thursday, January 25 between 12:00-3:00 pm. Please sign-up no later than Wednesday, January 24. 

o Auditions are by sign-up only. No walk-in appointments. 

o Audition Sign-Up Form 

• We will video record auditions for our out-of-town Music Director, Andrew Smithson. Eli Bigelow will provide piano accompaniment for our auditions.

• On the day-of, please provide a copy of your resume and headshot. Please provide any conflicts you may have with the rehearsal and performance calendar. 

CONTRACT DATES: 

• First rehearsal: April 23, 2024 

• Onstage rehearsal: May 23 and May 24, 2024 

• Tech: May 25 - May 29, 2024 

• Previews: May 30 – June 4, 2024 

• Opening/Press Night: June 5, 2024 

• Closing: June 30; possible extension to July 7, 2024 

• We rehearse Tuesday through Saturday, and our typical span of day is eight hours, starting anywhere from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. 

• When we move onstage the week of May 20, our schedule changes to Tuesday through Sunday with the span of day being eight out of ten hours. 

• After opening on June 5, it will be our performance schedule as listed on our website. 

NON-UNION SALARY: • $500.00/week • Housing and transportation not provided. 

UNDERSTUDY RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS: • Understudies are expected to be at all rehearsals from April 23-May 22, 2024. • Understudies are expected to attend spacing and tech rehearsals from 12:00-10:00 pm (with two-hour meal break) May 23-26 and May 28-29. • Understudies are expected to attend tech rehearsals during the day and preview performances from May 30-June 2, and June 4 at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be provided. • Understudies are on call for all previews and performances from May 30-July 7. • Once performances begin, understudies are required to attend weekly understudy rehearsals set by the Stage Manager and watch at least one show per week. 

Tickets will be provided. 

• Understudies will need to participate in a put-in rehearsal if they're going to perform and will be scheduled to do measurements and costume fittings with the costume department.
