Rhode Island College Theatre mourns the passing of Bob Colonna

Rhode Island College Theatre mourns the passing of Bob Colonna, a longtime adjunct professor and director whose presence shaped our department for years.  His life in the theatre was not simply long—it was deeply rooted, generous, and profoundly influential. For more than fifty years, he gave himself fully to the stage and to the people who shared it, leaving a legacy that reaches far beyond any single production.

As a teacher, Bob was unforgettable. He didn’t simply instruct—he performed, entertained, and regaled students with stories from a lifetime in the business. He challenged them, believed in them, and inspired them to go further than they thought possible. His direction of The Heiress and The Tempest reflected not only his mastery of craft, but his deep faith in the potential of every actor in the room. He had a rare ability to see what others might overlook, and he guided his students toward discoveries that would stay with them long after they left the stage.

We will miss his endless jokes, his show business stories, and his exuberant, larger-than-life spirit. The theatre community—especially here in Rhode Island—has lost a cornerstone. Yet his influence endures, woven into the fabric of the artists, students, and productions he helped bring to life.

Grace Van Patten is ‘Emanuella’

**SEEKING NEW ENGLAND BASED ACTORS ONLY**

[PATTY] Female, white, 18+ to play 17 years old. She’s a Pixar character come to life, but very pregnant and battling misery. Highly impressionable. Intelligent and inquisitive. She used to have a spark and wants to get it back, but right now the world feels unkind. Is there anything worth being excited about? Works at the local deli. Likes The Pixies and The Violent Femmes. SUPPORTING

[KITTY] Female, white, 18+ to play 15-17 years old. A small-town New England teen who’s ready to rebel but unsure how. Has a real spark. Emotionally mature, naturally savvy, insatiably curious. Frequently gets in trouble for cursing and talking back but isn’t ever trying to be difficult, just wants to make her point as convincingly as possible. Fancies herself political (radically progressive in the context of her tight-knit Italian Catholic family and community). Feels like the black sheep, which works for her. SUPPORTING

Logline: Rhode Island, 1992. An entrepreneurial ex-Pan Am stewardess opens a drive-thru condom kiosk in her Italian Catholic town. Overnight, Emanuella becomes the local lightning rod, a radical hero to the neighborhood teens and an unlikely threat to her tight-knit community.
