CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS

RILEY - (lead role) Female/female-presenting, must be able to play early-20s, any race/ethnicity. Riley is in her last semester of college, and the last thing she wants is to graduate. She is about to earn an accounting degree that she hated pursuing, but she doesn’t know what else to do with her life. As a result, she’s felt a little on edge recently. She’s overwhelmed and undermotivated, and has started to put off her last assignment of the year in favor of mindless scrolling. Spending time with friends helps her escape. When an obsessive government agent tasked with monitoring her online activity sets out to warn her about the harsh conditions that she’ll have to face post-grad, Riley’s anxiety about her future worsens and feelings of hopelessness increase. The worse she feels, the more she shrinks into herself.

MILES - (supporting) Male/male-presenting, must be able to play mid to late-20s, any race/ethnicity. Miles is a Junior Agent at the United States Data Collection Authority whose main responsibility is to monitor the online activities of an assigned group of IP addresses. He has a negative outlook on the world and finds himself getting frustrated with people who can find hope in dark times. He mistakes hopefulness for naivety and a lack of knowledge about the world. Miles doesn’t express this negativity through angry outbursts or aggression. Instead, he chooses his words carefully so he can leave strong impressions that lead people towards apathy. Miles saw Riley’s stress and avoidance in her online activity, and in it saw an opportunity to share his perspective on life. In his interactions with Riley, Miles tries to be slick and a little cryptic, though he lets his dry sense of humor slip into conversation.

CAROLINE - (supporting) Female/female-presenting, must be able to play early-20s, any race/ethnicity. Caroline is Riley’s best friend and roommate. She is kind-hearted, bright, and generally happy with her life. She’s great at calming herself and others down in tough situations, a skill she’s used a little too often recently with Riley. Caroline comforts Riley without mothering her. She recognizes that her advice will only do so much, and hopes to see Riley live a life she’s happy with.

LAUREN - (supporting) Female/female-presenting, must be able to play late teens/early 20s, any race/ethnicity. Lauren lives with Riley and Caroline. She is passionate, opinionated, and is currently pursuing a career as a tattoo artist. Lauren’s belief that people should do what they’re most passionate about in life clashes with Riley’s belief that she has to make the “right choices”. She doesn’t relate to Riley and feels that the obvious solution to Riley’s fear of her future is for her to find her passion. Still, she tries her best to be supportive, though she sometimes sounds more sarcastic than she thinks she is.
